Portrait of Rowena Martinich

Rowena Martinich is an Australian abstract expressionist painter. Her practice begins in the studio and expands into public art, architecture and design.

Known for her expressive use of colour, gesture and scale, she creates works that move between the intimacy of painting and the immersive experience of the built environment.

At the centre of Martinich’s practice is a highly physical and intuitive approach to painting. Her visual language is built through sweeping gestures, translucent veils, bold mark making and layered fields of luminous colour. Ribbons of paint move, overlap and interlace across the surface, creating rhythm, energy and a sense of continual movement. Developed through years of studio practice, this language becomes the foundation for her larger scale work, extending from canvas into murals, architectural installations and integrated design applications.

Martinich has developed a distinctly site responsive approach to her public practice. Colour, materiality, architecture and the way people move through a space all inform the development of a work. Rather than separating studio and public work, she sees them as part of the same evolving practice, with each informing the other.

Her projects span hospitality, property, retail, education, healthcare and civic environments, working with architects, interior designers, developers, councils, cultural organisations and brands. This breadth of experience has shaped a practice that combines artistic instinct with a strong understanding of collaboration, project delivery and the demands of the built environment.

Across both painting and public art, Martinich’s work is held together by a belief in the transformative potential of colour. Her work brings energy, atmosphere and a heightened sense of place, creating experiences that are bold, immersive and unmistakably her own.
